Lower Rio Grande Valley, TX - Scarcities Jan '09

Crimson-collared Grosbeak - female, Frontera Audubon Thicket, Weslaco, Hidalgo Co., Jan 19th. Digi-bin shot as the bird popped into view but was lost soon afterwards.

Crimson-collared Grosbeak - female, Frontera Audubon Thicket, Weslaco, Hidalgo Co., Jan 16th. Showed well on this particular morning against dull, overcast, drizzly skies.

Blue Bunting - female, Bentsen RGV State Park, Hidalgo Co., Jan 19th. Despite multiple reports across the LRGV we found this species incredibly aloof and difficult to track down. We finally caught up with this one on our last morning in 'the valley'.

Rose-throated Becard - imm male, Estero Llano Grande, Weslaco, Hidalgo Co., Jan 17th. Great views thanks to fine spotting by Kenny Ross.

Sprague's Pipit - Hidalgo Co., Jan 18th. A true grassland skulker, very difficult to see on the ground.

Clay-colored Thrush - Frontera Audubon Thicket, Weslaco, Hidalgo Co., Jan 16th. Good numbers of these in the LRGV this winter, including 2 - 3 on most of our visits to Frontera.

Common Paraque - Weslaco, Hidalgo Co., Jan 19th. Not especially rare in the LRGV but roosting birds in the daytime are always welcome.

Ferruginous Pygmy-owl - Willacy Co., Jan 19th.
