Raw northerlies bringing a taste of things to come and certainly the most wintery day of the fall so far. In addition to the wind, rain and showers for much of the afternoon brought a smattering of waterfowl as well as holding some longer stayers. As usual, I had no real time for birding at the weekend but managed 20 minutes at the power canal and 15 minutes at Barton Cove with Matan. Both sites had things to offer with 2 (continuing) Cackling Geese, 5 Ring-necked Ducks, 4 Common Goldeneye, 2 Hooded Mergansers, 2 male Bufflehead and 10 Common Mergansers all at the Turner's Falls power canal. The latter included an interesting tight group of five f hatch-year males.
Up at Barton Cove, 10 Bufflehead ( 6 yesterday) along with a female Black Scoter and a female Ruddy Duck. In short, I wish I could have been out for longer today. At home in Northfield two Fox Sparrows remained at the feeders but only showed well in the morning.
