Nelson's Gull (Glaucous x American Herring hybrid) - Windsor/Bloomfield Landfill, Hartord County. March 4th, 2009. Still present after a week affording better views and images. Larger than most American Herring Gulls with paler gray upperparts, dark slate gray (rather than black) primaries, and pale-lemon staring eye.

I have never even heard of this species of bird! The gulls in CT would send me into fits trying to ID them. We had a herring gull fly through AZ last year. I saw it at the Green Valley Wastewater treatment plant and wouldn't have known what species it was except for the fact that I was on an Audubon birding trip and the leaders identified it for us! Being able to take a photo and look for field marks at home is always much easier than trying to ID it in the field, but I suspect you knew what you were looking for. Once I learn a species, then it is a different matter, but first time views can be a challenge. Nice shots and good info here.
